Dangerous heatwave persists across Japan
A dangerous heatwave continues to grip Japan with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days through Friday.
The scorching weather is expected to persist on Saturday, affecting many areas from the Kanto to Kyushu regions.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says the temperature in the city of Kuwana in Mie Prefecture hit 40.4 degrees on Friday.
This marks the third straight day of a high of 40 degrees observed in Japan, following the country's record-breaking 41.2 degrees Wednesday in Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture.
Daytime highs on Saturday will likely reach 39 degrees in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, the cities of Nagoya, Gifu, Okayama, and Hita in Oita Prefecture.
A high of 38 degrees is forecast for the cites including Maebashi, Saitama, Hamamatsu, Kyoto, Takamatsu, and Kurume in Fukuoka Prefecture.
The cities including Osaka, Nara and Hiroshima can expect a high of 37 degrees. A high of 36 degrees is forecast for central Tokyo, Kobe City and elsewhere.
Heatstroke alerts have been issued for 35 of Japan's 47 prefectures on Saturday from the Tohoku region in the north to Okinawa in the south.
Weather officials are urging people to keep cool by using air conditioners, consuming adequate amounts of water and salt, and taking frequent breaks during outdoor activities.
